one swan lake

swanny

This is the somewhat tame swan at one of my favourite places to go (the Los Gatos Creek county park). Along with all the geese, ducks, seagulls and a bunch of other birds that I don’t know the names of, there is one solitary swan. I’ve posted him (I think it’s a him) before, but I was back again today for more because I can’t get enough of the place, evidently. Despite the fact that I haven’t lived in my hometown of Perth, Western Australia since I was 19, white swans are still rather novel to me. Having grown up with black swans in a state where they’re even on the coat of arms, I’ve also always expected any swan to be aggressive, but this guy is a total sweetheart who is very fond of the park rangers and humans generally speaking. Can you hug a swan? I hope so.

  1. We’ve white swans here that pad along a meadow near the river (within sight of our house). Seeing them in the distance we often mistake them for sheep – except they aren’t as muddy! πŸ™‚

    • Aww, how lovely that must be! Our local wildlife that I see the most is squirrels and deer. Occasionally we’ve seen a coyote (twice in almost two years), but we certainly hear them at night every now and again.

  2. Hi! Beautiful photo! I have been wondering where the swan came from. Do you think he is going to move somewhere for Summer?

    • I’ve been wondering the same thing for two years, but this seems to be his permanent home and he is much loved :). The summers here are mild enough for him, I reckon.
